I was riveted by the 2019 bushfires in Australia, and began to focus on the plight of the koalas, and the peril our earth is in. As the pandemic rolled out across the world, it became obvious that we are all interconnected. Friends in Sydney sent me pieces of charcoal from their fire sites, and I used them to draw my first temporary mural of a large koala. The charcoal is not permanent, and washes away in the elements. Since then, I have also used raw pigments and colored chalk. As we were in quarantine, I created these murals in and around my garage. Each mural was a visceral reaction to the shocking events I witnessed on the news. I also call them my “Silent Screams.” They are inspired by the history making events of 2020 - Covid, George Floyd, the BLM protests, fires, climate change, politics, and isolation.
