Angela Lewis' "Places We've Never Been" explores the connection between her late grandmother, and the older women she has photographed throughout the years. Triggered by a chance encounter in Vancouver, Angela realized she was on an unconscious search for her grandmother, and herself, by being drawn to photographing women alone in nature. The portraits, often taken from behind, capture a moment of introspection, with each subject seemingly lost in their own world. With the anonymity of the subjects, she’s inviting the viewer to step into the image, projecting their own narratives and memories. The series was recently featured in the Spring 2023 issue of The Walrus, and is being shown in a solo exhibition at Gallery 44, during May 2024, in Toronto.
