Black Flowers is an ode to black artists and intellectuals in the form of fine art still life photography. The table in this series highlights black excellence, we can imagine it sitting in a home much like the imagined home of the 17th-century still life. Referencing the Dutch still life paintings that brought together exotic items of flowers and fruits and proudly displayed items from around the globe during a time of dominance, colonization, and exploitation. My aim is to represent black artists and intellectuals and extend them a seat at the table. I curate each still life with items familiar to still life paintings and create a table reflective of my culture. Reclaiming the status of black heritage as a literal allegorical display of the cultural production of a people.
