In my photographs, I don't want to depict what a fern looks like. I want to show what it feels like to see the fern at that moment.
I like the term sfumato. It actually comes from oil painting and means a technique in which the painted things become blurred and connected. In my photographs, I connect with my pictures in this way because I give them a part of my inner life beyond my gaze through the texts I write for my photographs. The boundaries of the depicted moment blur with my association, just as the grease or liquids I often use on the lens blur the boundaries between light, colour and the depicted object.
