A native of New York City, Toshee studied design at Harvard under the late, great Toshihiro Katayama, internationally acclaimed graphic designer, sculptor and painter. His artist name pays homage to his teacher, who passed away in January 2013.
He learned using traditional paste-up techniques that made extensive use of paper, adhesive, ink, paint, film, cutting and measuring instruments, photo manipulations, and Letraset transfers. To those techniques, he has added his proficiency in digital design software.
In regards to his work, Toshee remarks: “When composing my pieces, I try to find harmonies that resonate from the interplay of figurative elements, geometrical abstractions, and seemingly chaotic drips and splashes.”
