Iain Maclean was born in a town and country that no longer exist (now called Kabwe and Zambia).
His father was Scottish and his mother Polish, but his earliest artistic influences were initially African and then later European art, particularly Francis Bacon
He moved to England and studied art at Goldsmiths where he moved away from figurative, to more conceptual work and designed “rooms” exploring the senses: touch, sight, audio and particularly smell.
In the 70s he grew disenchanted with art and destroyed all his work. He then entered advertising and became an award-winning copywriter and creative director. He returned to art school, Central St Martins, In 2006/7. Shortly afterwards became a full-time artist.
Since then he has exhibited mainly distorted figurative paintings and sculpture and some abstract work.
