Jorge Villarreal is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in photography. As a first generation Mexican American who grew in the border town of McAllen, Texas Villarreal was immersed into two distinct cultures. A sense of in-betweenness and not belonging influences his process and work. Color and symbolism are central to his image making, as is the process of occupying spaces as a flaneur. In his work places of tension like Cuba are key to immerse himself in the culture and explore it with his own. Discovering similarities and contradictions with politics, religion, and the people he encounters influences Villarreal to see the forgotten aspects amongst the familiar allowing him to capture unstaged moments that reveal a new perspective on his subjects.
