Primarily focused on painting, Dylan Humphreys’ mark-making sensibilities echo the traditions of comic art and illustration, while applied to Modern ideas of painting such as abstraction, and impressionist figuration. Typography, speech balloons and other diagrammatic comic signs are often juxtaposed with figures and spaces that evoke the flatness of the printed image. Dylan’s study is often linked to his exploration of eyesight, and in his case of “double vision”, he explores the graphic representation of space and figures and produces illogical variations that somehow “read”. Sometimes using archival material and sometimes automatic painting, Dylan sees his work as a process that is in a continuous state of evolution.
