Crescent Cheng (b. Honolulu, 1993) paints visual diaries of daily life and the environment to honor & find humor in personal experiences, communicating the universal in the specific. Glowing layers under dark shapes convey emotional volatility, impermanence, and overlapping strata of memories.
Documenting recent history and specific locations, her work seeks to place subjective individual experiences within their broader historical context. A more “objective” anthropological perspective offers an opportunity to reconsider our priorities and assumptions, especially with regard to mental illness, cultural heritage, internet culture, and environmental change.
