Charles Compo has been a bicycle messenger, construction worker, actor, composer, bandleader, and entrepreneur. Born in New York City, his parents were both professional musicians. In the early eighties he frequently played at legendary lower eastside clubs like CBGBs, The Mudd Club and The Pyramid. During those days he worked as an assistant for various artists including Andy Warhol and Harry Smith. He composed music for Harry Smith’s film number 21, Fragments Of A Faith Forgotten and a selection of those compositions are now published by Smithsonian Folkways. Over the years he has recorded and collaborated with many diverse artists including Oliver Lake, William Hooker, Roy Campbell Jr., Sonny Sharrock, Vernon Reid, Twyla Tharp, Christina Aguilera, Don Fury and Curtis Fowlkes.
