Inspired by our relation with masks, rooted in her long interest for the unlikely forms and textures of flowers and plants, her portraits and self-portraits question themes of alterity, identity, our bond to nature. They display the need to hide oneself as much asthe desire to expose oneself. With her petals and plastic monsters, Camille Kouassi gives a face to the Weird, the Strange, the "Unheimlich".
Her masks are made in two different sequences. First, she creates the mask itself, a combination of organic elements (Flowers, Branches, Moss, Fruits peels) and of materials from her daily life (Cello film, Marbles, Cardboard paper) assembled on a solid structure. Then she takes a picture, often a self-portrait. From her work emerge strong and impactful images, with powerful contrasts.
