I have always been attracted to old paintings depicting the visions and dreams of saints and prophets. In my collages, I try to channel this visionary quality by making pictures that read as hallucinations, mirages, or moments of revelation. Art history plays an important role in my work, and I always try to make pictures that both engage with and are a continuation of the past.
People now see hundreds of pictures every day—their ubiquity makes the viewer indifferent. By engaging with the past, I hope to make work that can arrest or entrap the viewer, capturing some of the magic that images once held.
