When Words Lose Meaning

Poetry is one of the most difficult forms of writing to translate with precision. As a photographer, I have always been exploring non-verbal communication. When words lose their meaning, can poetry still be moving? To explore this question, I brought together two women who cannot communicate through language: Peipei from China, and Dieu, a poet born and raised in Russia. Through my lens, Dieu lies in her bed, reciting her own poems in Russian, while Peipei uses a calligraphy brush to write the emotions brought about by these unfamiliar words on Dieu's body. In this poetic and humorous interaction, the meaning of verbal communication fades, only to be redefined in a new, profound way.
