Heraclitus of Ephesus philosophized that nothing is permanent except change. I am both terrified and enchanted by his philosophy, so most of my artistic adventures investigate its relevance to my experience. I am torn between a drive to preserve what was known to me, and a drive to embrace the ever-shifting chaos. I'm particularly interested in human memory, and the duality of growth/deterioration in natural systems. Captivated by the relentless cycle of change, I often paint with layers of process-based materials that are physically unpredictable or ephemeral, and found materials with personal histories. Remnants from the past make their way into my mixed media paintings, especially corroded photographs, often my own or my family's. My habit of documentation in any form is an exercise confronting the tension of impermanence.
