Most of us eat everyday. Like many trades in our highly industrialized society, the production of our food is opaque, we buy it at the grocery store. Most of the food we find in these efficient food sellers is produced through industrial agriculture.
Industrial agriculture is the large-scale, intensive production of crops and animals, often involving chemical fertilizers on crops or the routine use of antibiotics in animals.
Since the 1950s, as the agriculture industry has become more efficient and profit driven, over 90% of local farms have disappeared. The five year survival rate of new farms is < 50%. Despite this data, the next generation of farmers presses on, many of them are interested in traditional agricultural practices which prize diversified and restorative methods of crop and animal production.
It is hard work.
