Vann Powell is a documentary and landscape photographer based in Durham, North Carolina. As a child Vann first began using cameras to try to capture ghosts on film. It remains unclear if the artist was ever successful in capturing specters on film. Powell graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Philosophy. After finishing university, Vann moved abroad where he lived in Prague, CZ and Seoul, ROK. Over the course of six years abroad, Vann Powell honed and concerted his photography practice as a way to document travel, culture, and people. After returning from abroad, Vann settled in Durham, North Carolina where he currently works as a freelance photographer while finishing the documentary photography certificate program at Duke University's Center for Documentary Studies.
