Stories from Classical mythology have pervaded European culture. My work seeks to address how myths reflect, reinforce and influence our gender ideologies. I interpret and retell mythology from a feminist perspective by creating detailed, photo realistic, yet stylized, figurative oil paintings on canvas. Some of my paintings feature models that portray characters from Classical Greek mythology with contemporary attributes. I have recently focused on painting sculptures from Hellenistic Greece through the Neoclassical movement in an effort to question what is “set in stone” in regard to gender roles and how we perceive women. I view and paint these retellings of myth through a feminist lens and pair them with contextualized images of flowers that together reflect themes about gender politics, such as gender inequity and violence
