As a representational oil painter, my work includes perceptual painting, narrative, and formal investigations. My current work explores the idea of ‘home’, whether it be with people, in a specific place or memory. My subject matter includes portraits and scenes from my upbringing in both Ireland and California. My process involves using photos and sketches taken from these locations and collaging them together into carefully constructed compositions. These imaginary scenes are influenced by the genre of Romanticism and use motifs and imagery of magpies, bare trees, hooded figures and gloomy atmospheres to convey my experience of ‘home’.
