The campaign Witches of Scotland was launched in 2020 seeking to address the miscarriage of justice that happened under the Witchcraft Act, in Scotland, between 1563 and 1736. It aims for a legal pardon for thousands of people accused and executed during that period.
During nearly two hundred years of witch-hunt a number close to 4000 people were sentenced, and around 2500 people were tortured, and killed. The majority of them was women.
They Put a Spell on Us is a photographic project done in collaboration with the founders of the campaign WoS, through interviews and visits to key historical locations of the Scottish trials. The result is a series of images combining portraits and landscape through an approach known as ‘late photography’. These were places where once ordinary women lived, were accused, trialed and executed.
