Photography has always offered a well-composed falsehood for the viewer. Undesirable elements have been excluded from the frame, or removed afterwards. Initially landscape photography in America was employed to demonstrate Manifest Destiny, the myth of plentiful emptiness of the land, ready to be taken by the new conquering hero.
In ‘The World With Us’ we do not see a straight landscape. We witness a combination of what is straight ahead with what is behind, above, to the left or right. We can never know what the landscape actually looks like. That question becomes irrelevant, because we cannot trust that any landscape is actually what we think it is. The images demonstrate that our status is forever unknowable and our over-reliance on the visible will always prevent us from understanding the full picture.
