Varanasi or Benares. The Holy Grail of India according to many travelers. It's one of the oldest cities in the world sitting on the banks of the river Ganges and that's exactly why it's so important to Indian people. Everybody wants to die in Varanasi and/or be cremated on the banks of the holy river.
We stayed in Varanasi for 5 days during our two months in India and the only thing we did there was exploring the narrow alleys and the ghats on the banks of the river Ganges. The ghats are the stone stairs leading down to the river and it's the place where all the locals gather in the evening. For a photographer it's a fascinating place; dozens of interesting scenes unfold before your eyes and all is covered in the most beautiful evening light...
