Selina Javaid is an artist and educator based in North London with mixed Austrian and Indian heritage. Her interest in belonging and sense of place has led her to investigate themes around otherness and identity using different paint mediums.
Her daughter has been both a hurdle and inspiration to her practice as she battles with time and energy to paint whilst juggling the mundane of the every day. In the quiet moments, when she rejoices over time won when her daughter naps, she also felt an overwhelming sense of guilt at not committing enough time to her daughter. This is a typical response for most parents and was further amplified during by lockdown. During the pandemic, her daughter became accustomed to sleeping in the master bed, in the safe warmth between her parents.
