I never really thought of making self-deprecation a pretext for a photo series. Fortunately, I have no shame. When the thought arose that a story of personal unfulfillment could be just as compelling as say, a novel about an indulgent road trip, the idea for my series SourSweet was born. I usually like to take my camera everywhere. I like to drift, project myself onto surfaces and situations, finding images as a result. This time around I felt an impulse to pursue a narrative that embraces personal flaws. Pushing myself to do precisely that, I loved the sense of adventure I encountered working on this series. I enjoyed being tongue in cheek about wearing my personal crisis on my sleeves. It was gratifying to expand the medium of photography by “noodling” with illustration and digital collage. SourSweet is an ongoing process.
