“Sommerfrische” in the Latvian no man’s land

The old German word "Sommerfrische" stands for the desire of city dwellers to escape town during hot summer days - exchanging hot, cramped concrete blocks for a fresh country-side breeze. It has this innocent, nostalgic feeling of a childhood holiday. The only responsibility you have is getting the campfire ready before grandma starts to cook, the only thing you worry about is if the packed wine will last the weekend. The sleepy community "Ziemupe" far in the Latvian hinterland is an excellent "Sommerfrische" destination. Long stretches of uninhabited forests protect the wide beaches while the Baltic Sea creates a subtle, hypnotizing soundtrack. Skinny dipping in the morning - well, nobody's there to watch anyway - mushroom picking in the afternoon and toasting to the sunset with an extra full glass of wine. Life is easy.
