Lucinda Calder grew up in a small, secluded town in British Colombia, Canada. Her childhood was marked by neglect and poverty as well as the alcoholism and drug abuse of the adults around her. Lucinda now uses her art practice to explore and document the complicated nature of her traumatic and chaotic upbringing. She creates dynamic, colourful and playful illustrations that capture a childlike whimsy, while simultaneously, the detailed scenes often reveal something uncanny, violent, chaotic and upsetting, which can be masked by the humorous scenes surrounding them. This mirrors the experiences of childhood abuse and the complexities that come along with healing from them in adulthood.
