In his work, Johan Van Oeckel (°1971 Belgium) starts from the pure form, which he then loads with information. Color is an important signifier here, because it automatically refers to a certain zeitgeist. Every work says “I am” instead of “I become”, because he remains faithful to the pure idea and there is no progression in it. He provides the viewer with a visual enjoyment that exists outside of any specific place or time, a universal experience. Each work is a dose of sacral geometry, a personal icon that the viewer may appropriate in all sovereignty. In his practice, Johan Van Oeckel opens up the playing field of abstraction in a broad and fascinating way. The result is a visual language that refreshes, surprises and produces new types of energizing symbols.
