The Shadowplay series started as collages assembled by using pieces of found imagery that would have otherwise been discarded. The series quickly grew to include especially sourced vintage floral arrangements lending themselves to have their most catching features cut away, leaving only a shadow of the original image. In this way a new image is created with renewed equilibrium yet it's cut lines indicate a core piece has been lost.
Shadowplay is a personal project by Dutch collage artist Nicola Kloosterman.
Using vintage ikebana arrangements which focus on the importance of silence, space, form, humanity, aesthetics, and balance, Kloosterman destroys and
re-assembles these delicate arrangements to create a new image that strikes a balance between expectation and reality.
