I use narrative tropes as a conceptual framework in my work. It’s not so much that the paintings illustrate a story, but the story helps generate imagery, serving as a jumping off point. Currently I am researching the American road story structure, which usually features a character taking off in pursuit of contentment, escape or discovery. The road narrative often begins with idealistic depictions of the country. As the story progresses the unfolding of these ideal complicate, revealing a more chaotic image. In turn this symbolism of the road occupies a space between disappointment and hope. The trope complicates the narrative further – simultaneously presenting as a setback while moving the story forward.
