This series of images focuses on Cuba- its youth and the world to come.
I traveled from one end of the island to the other documenting the youth of the country and how they live, trying to ascertain what sort of a future they saw. An older generation has lived for 50 years under communist rule and US trade embargoes. What did they envisage for their future? Was there a desire to break free of the past? Or was there a certain fatalism writ large on their faces?
The nature of a photograph is limitation. I wanted the images to push those limits, to fill the space both physically and viscerally, to capture in the composition of an image an intensity, a longing, a desire for new possibilities, a forging of a world to come.
