Working intuitively, I make non-objective paintings. By using both painterly and graphic elements, I intend to portray a balance of chaos and order. The intensity of the color can engage the viewer, yet often conceals its aggressive nature. What appears to be a cheerful palette is rebellious. Forms may hold meaning, though meanings reveal themselves slowly.
Influences include graffiti artists. Before landing in Raleigh, I moved frequently; Charlotte, DC, Dallas, Richmond, and Orlando. I sought the grittiest areas of each place to find it's defining art. I respected the level of skill demonstrated and was interested in the transient nature of the work. That experience shaped the theme of my work. Ideas about chaos and control are always in play, but I am open to new inspiration. @marthathorn
