I am primarily a painter, and at that a firmly realistic painter in color. In my paintings, painstaking representational accuracy is turned in on itself to become an ironic critical tool. The symbols of play and pleasure that I depict — piano keys, seascapes, skate ramps, a bath tub — are shown with a clarity which we wish we could have in our lives. The delight a viewer of these paintings takes in their illusionism is a substitute, but a knowingly poor one, for the delight these simple objects themselves would impute in a less tangled world than ours. For now, though, what we have are the things they represent.
