I first met Ant at a skatepark in a small town about half an hour from Dallas. I was shooting with my old Rolleiflex and as he skated past me he remarked at how interesting a camera it was. I politely asked him for a portrait which quickly turned into shooting two rolls of him and a full-fledged photo shoot. There was instant creative chemistry.
Now, anytime I visit home I know that I have to shoot with Ant. He and I are both incredibly interested in expressing the negative and the positive ways in which southern masculinity defines who we are (a small part of larger series I'm working on). To me, he embodies this series in all its complexities.
These photographs were made at an overflown lake in my hometown of Grapevine, Texas.
