Primarily a portrait photographer, social distancing ordinances have forced me to discover new subjects. I took long rambling walks during lockdown to burn off anxiety, and realized that outside of the common routes I took each day, there were many areas of my neighborhood that I had never explored. I approached each scene and object as I would a portrait session. While making each photograph, I developed a kind of emotional connection with the scene or object, and now as I look back on the images, I realize those places have been illuminated in the internal map I have of my neighborhood and community, the same way a friend’s house down the street might be.
