German artist liina klauss brings together community in Bali to create a land-art installation made from 20,000 flip-flops.
The artist is known to paint with plastic waste instead of paint. Her installations are usually abstract color fades made from objects found in direct vicinity to the installation site. For this installation, over 100 volunteers came together and placed 20,000 flip-flops on a rural street adding up to colorful, 5-meter high letters.
Apart from bringing together the community, liina's installation gives a direct insight into the scale of plastic pollution on the island of Bali. "Touching things, like in this case plastic pollution, automatically means that you are being touched."
All shoe soles were collected from rivers during a 1-year period with the help of SungaiWatch, an Indonesian NGO.
