I use boxing themes in my work because the image of a fighter is a perfect visual metaphor for many of the things that all people experience in life: hardship, struggle, pain, joy, triumph, tragedy, and redemption. It’s through these shared experiences that I hope viewers can connect with my work and see something of themselves in each piece. I always portray my subjects in static poses because I think it better conveys the point that life is much more of a mental and spiritual fight than a physical one. It brings a sense of stillness and introspection to my subjects which allows the viewer to relate in a more intimate an immediate way. My use of single figure compositions is a deliberate attempt to highlight the fact that whatever demons we are battling, we must ultimately have the courage and strength to confront them alone.
