My goal as an artist is to encourage playful examination of gender-, race-, class-, sexuality-, body-, and ability-based cultural assumptions. To do so, I use bright colors, high contrast, pixelation, abstract and cartoonish forms, and literary allusions to create a sense of material, tangible whimsy.
In the series of images I submit here (Künstlerroman 1-4), I’m examining my own artistic development and a former, parallel struggle to locate myself in an academic context designed to dismiss my writing on teaching and/with popular visual culture as not “scholarly” enough.
