I use watercolor to express universal emotional states and the unique spirits of my portrait subjects, balancing experimental, abstract use of the media with realism and symbolism. About two years ago, I started exploring non-traditional use of masking fluid, applied in large rough swaths, to “splice” together different views of the portrait. It has opened up new possibilities for my portraits, by allowing me to create a feeling of movement or the passage of time, to create contrasts between disparate expressions, and to explore the relationships between individuals.
