The first inventory of likeness I thought of consists of 16 similar shapes and their captions.
In my masters thesis I’ve used the peircean concept of likeness (iconicity) extensively and how it can be a powerful social tool. Today, as an illustrator, likeness is literally what I work with everyday to convey meaning and create an impact.
The inventories of likeness are a way for me to reflect on what I find the most interesting in illustration, i.e. the relationship between words and images. It also exemplify my feeling that illustration plays a huge role in teaching “visual literacy” in a society that we keep defining as image based, yet without providing any education around their power.
