This body of work features coloured pencil drawings of the Old Masters’ exquisite dead birds that have invaded their ornate frames.
The works seek to playfully disrupt the allocation of value in Western Art by using “kids stuff” (i.e. coloured pencils and blackboard paint) to portray arguably some of the highest of High Art subjects.
The artist created intentionally long-winded narrative titles to provide an invented and obviously fictitious summary of each bird’s emotional feelings and circumstances.
All of the Flemish Still Life subjects have multi-syllabic names that are drawn from either Shakespearean Characters or Greek Mythology to comically reinforce the outdated pomposity of the Western Canon.
This solo exhibition of Laura E. Kennedy and will take place at .M Contemporary Woollahra Sydney Feb 3-24 2018.
