I love pursuing realism, and I’m fascinated by people, emotions and the concept of beauty, and portraits are the perfect vehicle for this. ‘heavenly’ is a series that attempts to interrogate ‘femininity’ as both a personal experience and a concept, as well as the expectations embedded in it - most notably beauty (in the very constricted gender normative sense), and the expectation of its pursuance.
my teenage years were an uncomfortable try on – there seemed to be one way for women to be viewed as attractive, which we are expected to aspire to. yet it was also made clear that were we, was I, to be attacked, this femininity would be the cause of it. what i’ve mostly struggled with is separating my will from society’s.
in this series I'm exploring and deconstructing what (my) femininity means to me within such a world.
