I grew up playing a 200-year-old Japanese card game with my family called Hanafuda, which translates to "flower cards." This series is inspired by these beautiful floral cards. Some of the photos look nothing like the cards, and that's okay. I made these photos in Woodstock, New York, 5,000 miles from where my family lives in Honolulu. I am performing my Japanese-ness for the camera, for myself, and ultimately for you as the viewer, as a way to connect with home, even when I am very far away.
