Inspired by present-day parents wishing to protect their children’s privacy online, I began to wonder what family portraits would look like if past generations had also safe-guarded the identities of their offspring. Generation Public is the result of that curious notion. The series is 10 images representing each decade of the 20th century. The familiar image of family has been coupled with modern day emojis painted in the style of the times, resulting in an image that seems historical while simultaneously contemporary. The paintings are intentionally comedic, representing the futility of privacy defence in the modern age.
