My work investigates the quiet, ineffable mysteries of consciousness that are so easily taken for granted. The conscious experience is seemingly effortless and constant, but critical inquiry reveals it to be a fragile, symbolic construction. For example: My mind omits, supplements, replaces, simplifies, and takes wild guesses with the sensory information it is fed from my eyes. Yet, brief eye contact with another person can project my consciousness across space at the speed of light with an assertive palpability. I am intimately connected to the people and things around me by a complex system in my head that I may never understand, so I paint and draw to reconcile the boundaries between self, other, and object. I seek a comfortable resting place between science and spirituality that will offer some framework of understanding.
