When the German Democratic Republic (DDR) dissolved in 1990, it left behind a complicated legacy forged on the front lines of socialism and a divided Europe. It took less than one year from the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 for two Germanys to become one. The suddenness of reunification is still visible today as the monuments, buildings and iconography of the East German regime continue to dot the landscape. Once symbols of power, solidarity and life in a society working toward socialism, they are today worn by the passage of time, abandoned and often forgotten. But for millions of Germans, they are a reminder of life before "die Wende."
