En Limbo (2020-2021) follows my journey of learning about and dealing with my mother’s stage-three lung cancer diagnosis while living separately from her (my mother in Caracas and me in Brooklyn). With this news in mind, I embarked on long walks where I closely examined my surroundings, searching to connect with Brooklyn while creating images of this time, building a space of self-reflection. The project lives between the physical and mental space that separates me from my mother while experiencing the devastating disease. The series comprises photographs of objects found in the street that reference decay, recovery, hope, and self-portraits where I am covered with plastic bags in isolated locations. En Limbo provided me a therapeutic space to pay attention to her emotions; it is a gift for my mother.
