Embodied Journey

I express my lived experiences with a congenital birth defect called Spina Bifida into textile and digital art, addressing themes of "what is normal?", absence, and transformation. My works—such as "Hinds Feet on High Places," reflects on my painful journey with pressure sores, and "Milagros for Lulu," an ode to my grandmother who reinforced my normal is normal—illustrate the complex relationship I have with my body through various techniques like katazome, screen printing, and hand painting on silk. My digital pieces, including "Vertical Limits" and "Translucent Truths," surrealistically juxtapose personal imagery with anatomical forms of the spinal column to convey the struggles and beauty of navigating a life shaped by this disability. Through my art, I invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences of imperfection.
