Alina Kisina was born in Kiev, Ukraine and has lived in the UK since 2003. After being inspired by a photography exhibition on a trip to Germany she began to photograph seriously on her own, developing an individual style that departed from many of the norms then prevailing in fine art photography.
Her first work emerged on return trips to her native Ukraine, beginning in 2006, and resulted in three collections: Inner Space, City of Home, and Dacha. Using a 35mm camera and large-grain black-and-white film, Kisina began experimenting with reflection, light, form, and depth when photographing urban spaces in her native Kiev. These pictures, which give equal weight to representation and abstraction, use striking reflections, sharp diagonals and contrasting forms to confuse our normal sense of spatial orientation.
