The artworks are about my impressions of an evolving China that I observed while living in Shanghai. I used traditional clothing from the Qing Dynasty to represent China’s former peak of power, and combined them with images of western goods as they integrate in the 21st century as not only the manufacturer of such goods, but increasingly also major consumers. The women with the patterned backgrounds represent the young women who have been moving from rural villages to large cities to find work, and who often end up as the primary income-earner of their families. This changes the social dynamics of the families and has empowered the young women with greater independence.
