My work focuses on gatherings and communities, especially those that are formed and influenced by place--ice climbing festivals in Colorado, dune buggy culture in California, experimental cities in the Arizona desert. I wanted to photograph a gathering that spoke to that great driving force of American expansion and conservative politics: evangelical Christianity. In 2017, I photographed the Creation Festival Northwest, the western branch of the largest Christian rock festival in the country. What I found were people not so different from my liberal friends in Los Angeles: they saw a world filled with inequity and pain, and they were certain they knew how to save it.
