Alonzo’s work explores our consumption of information, narratives and deep fakes. How can we decipher between what is real and what is an illusion? The artist paints using acrylic paint mixed with a gel medium, which is then piped onto the surface using pastry bags and tips- the paint looks like frosting. The end result is intricate and sculptural and the application pointillistic. This mimics the pixels we view in media. To create these images, Alonzo creates a set; a world comprised of Playdoh, buttercream frosting, toys and figurines. The texture of the surface not only engages the audience, but invites the viewer to touch. This facet ties into the concept regarding our interaction with media; the black mirror we are constantly interacting with is a direct juxtaposition to the complex and varied surface of the paintings.
